Amendment offered by Senator Mike Lee not included.
On Tuesday night, the U.S. Senate passed legislation that provides federal protection for same-sex marriages. The measure overcame the filibuster with support from twelve members of the minority party. The legislation now goes to the House of Representatives for approval of the changes made by the Senate. Once approved, it will go to President Biden’s desk for signature.
An amendment from Senator Mike Lee that would have protected schools, businesses, and organizations due to religious beliefs did not pass. The current bill repeals the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act which defined marriage as being between one man and one woman. The measure requires that a marriage that was legal in the state where it was licensed must be recognized by every other state as legal.
